A museum that got its start 6,000 miles away – in Croatia – is coming to Phoenix.

The Museum of Illusions, part of a worldwide franchise that launched in 2015 on a small, winding street in Zagreb, is projected to open on the Arizona Boardwalk alongside OdySea Aquarium and Butterfly Wonderland near Scottsdale in November.

The museum will feature more than 60 illusions spread throughout the 5,000-square-foot space, said Stacy Stec, marketing manager for LOL Entertainment, the parent company of Museum of Illusions Scottsdale.

"You’re going to go and have a great time, you’re going to laugh, you’re going to take photos with friends or family, but you’re also going to learn about vision and perception and the brain while you immerse yourself in a world of illusions,” Stec said.

“The Phoenix-Scottsdale area is booming right now. It’s a year-round destination with outdoor recreation, an arts scene and a hopping food scene. We are excited to bring something new to the mix.”

“We are really proud that the educational component sets us apart,” Spec said. “You are going to learn something when you exit the museum. Illusions help you learn a thing or two about how your brain constructs reality. And it’s for all ages. We like to say that adults have even more fun than the kids do.”

The museum will feature optical illusions, immersive illusion rooms, holograms and hand-drawn illusions that museum visitors create for themselves.

It will also pay tribute to Phoenix, as each of the museums across the world highlight their respective locations. In Philadelphia, for example, an illusion room is modeled after the historic Elfreth’s Alley.

“We have a building illusion and it looks as though guests are scaling the wall of these traditional row homes in Philadelphia,” Spec said.

Other highlights of the Phoenix-area museum include a room where guests appear to grow or shrink as they walk across it, a vortex tunnel that makes guests believe the floor is moving even though they are on a flat, stable surface and a "Rotated Room" where guests will appear as though they are hanging from the ceiling or walking on walls.

The museum will refresh exhibits every few years to ensure new experiences.
