Staunton is a two-time Emmy Award nominee, previously nominated for the HBO movie “The Girl.” She is the third actress nominated for playing Queen Elizabeth on the Netflix hit, following Claire Foy and Olivia Colman. Both Foy and Colman have won Emmys for playing Queen Elizabeth on the show.

For this 2024 contest, Staunton is competing against Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Carrie Coon (“The Gilded Age”), Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), Anna Sawai (“Shogun”) and Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”). The 2023 category winner was Sarah Snook for the final season of “Succession.”

“The Crown” is an Emmy Awards favorite, with 87 total nominations across its six-season run and 21 wins, including Best Drama Series in 2021. This year, “The Crown” received 18 overall nominations, including Best Drama Actress for Staunton, Best Drama Actor for Dominic West, Best Drama Supporting Actress for Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville, and Best Drama Guest Actress for Foy. “Sleep, Dearie Sleep” also received a nomination for Daldry in Best Drama Directing.
