The new 'Incredibles 2' trailer says #TimesUp on male superheroes having all the fun
As if last summer’s reigning box office queen Wonder Woman weren’t proof enough, Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel Incredibles 2 makes it clear that time is officially up on male superheroes hogging all the action. A just-released trailer for Brad Bird’s 14-years-in-the-making continuation of his 2004 animated favorite places Helen Parr aka Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) front and center in the field, while her husband, Bob aka Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), holds down the home front. “It’s crazy, right?” Helen says at one point, summing up the existential dilemma confronting every woman who’s pulling double duty as a mom and crime-fighting avenger. “To help my family, I gotta leave it; to fix the law, I’ve gotta break it.” (Watch the new trailer above.)
Even though there’s been a lengthy gap between films, Incredibles 2 begins as if no time has passed, with the Parr family, which also includes visibility-challenged Violet (Sarah Vowell), speedy Dash (Huck Milner), and multifaceted infant Jack-Jack, battling the Underminer (Pixar lucky charm John Ratzenberger). That battle encourages telecommunications giant Winston Deaver (Bob Odenkirk) to do his part to reverse the government ban on superheroes that originally put Mr. Incredible and his incredible friends, including Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson), whose wife makes a crowd-pleasing reappearance at the end of the trailer, out of business. For the face of his initiative, Deaver chooses Elastigirl, feeling that she’s the “best play” to “change people’s perceptions about superheroes.”
With Helen’s new job comes a new Wayne Manor-style mansion, complete with Elasti-cave and Elasti-cycle, as well as a sleek new costume that’s more Dark Knight than Crimson Avenger. Although her family is initially thrilled, the reality of having Dad around the house all the time quickly takes its toll in the form of homework troubles and combusting babies. But fear not! The entire clan inevitably reunites to take on a new threat, the Screen Slayer, who hypnotizes people through their television sets.
Judging from the Twitter feedback, it’s safe to say that the Incredibles 2 trailer already has fans hypnotized. Here’s a sampling of the feedback.
