Influential funk band will play Peoria riverfront this weekend

Influential 1970s funk and soul band Zapp is scheduled to perform Saturday at Peoria Riverfront Park. The “electrifying night of funk, soul, and unforgettable rhythms” is set for 7 p.m. with gates opening at 6 p.m.

Devon Gilfillian is scheduled to open the Peoria Park District-sponsored show with a blend of rock and soul music. Tickets are available online for $19 at etix.com or $27 the day of the show.

The Dayton, Ohio-based funk band Zapp has been performed dance and party music since the late 1970s. Drawing inspirations from such artists as James Brown and George Clinton, Zapp has in turn influenced artists like Daft Punk and Justin Timberlake.

The band’s notable hits include "More Bounce to the Ounce" and "Dance Floor, Part 1,” as well as "California Love," a collaboration with 2Pac and Dr. Dre. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997.
