Insane 60-Plus-Hour ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Hobbit’ Blu-ray Collection to Be Released

Superfan

A pretty interesting box set was listed on Amazon this week. According to the Internet retailer, a 30-disc Blu-ray collection of all three of the Hobbit films and all three Lord of the Rings films will be available for purchase on Oct. 4. That’s right, 30 discs. An official release with information about this set hasn’t been made available at this time, so we don’t know everything. That being said, the Amazon page for the collection does have a fair amount of details.

The collection:

  • It contains all six movies, extended edition versions, and tons of bonus footage, meaning there will be more than 60 hours of content.

  • The discs are in faux-leather cases that rest in a Peter Jackson–designed, Hobbit-style solid wood shelf.

  • There will be a 100-page book with original film sketches and artwork you can slap up on your wall as well as a re-creation of the Red Book of Westmarch, that book Frodo and Bilbo write.

  • With your physical media, digital copies of all the films will be included.

And now the part you’re wondering most of all — the cost of this behemoth. Well, Amazon doesn’t have a price listed, but the folks over at io9 wrote that they saw an $800 price tag. Even though nobody has bought it yet, the set is already getting mixed reviews, with a complaint being that there’s no mention of it being 3D or 4K. On the Lord of the Rings Subreddit, reaction was a resounding meh. Even comments on the fan site the One Ring weren’t entirely glowing.

One assumes the price will be going down, and it’s entirely possible more details will come to light, but yikes… People don’t seem exactly amped for this. How about you? Will you be getting this for the Tolkien fan in your life this holiday season?
