Joan Vassos, ABC's first "Golden Bachelorette," has experienced and shown a whirlwind of emotions this season, however, Roemer said she still carried herself with grace and poise.

The three Iowans on 'The Golden Bachelorette' shared plenty of connections

There were two other men on the show who were familiar with the Hawkeye State, Jonathan Rone from Oakland, Iowa, and Jordan Heller, a University of Iowa graduate. Roemer said the three men shared plenty of connections. He and Heller even overlapped during their time in Iowa City and lived in fraternities less than a mile away apart.

Another coincidence between the men? Rone and Roemer both spent time living in Kansas City. Although, Rone was there before his move to Iowa, and Roemer spent time there after graduating from Iowa.

Roemer said there was plenty to bond over between Iowa and other Midwest connections, and the men definitely always had a good time talking about their team, the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Dan Roemer's Des Moines roots run deep — he was even a paperboy in Beaverdale

While his family is all out of the state now, Roemer said he still tries to visit Des Moines around once a year. He still has plenty of friends here.

Roemer attended Des Moines' Roosevelt High School and said he was a paperboy for the Register and Tribune in the early 1970s.

His favorite spot for food when he comes back? Noah's Ark Ristorante.

Roemer said the Ingersoll restaurant's thin-crust pizza is a must-have, and he remembers always heading there with his family during his childhood and teen years.

"It's the best pepperoni on the planet […] That's a must-do," Roemer said.

"I went in there with an open mind, to try to get to know her," Dan said. "And that's the process we moved through. So I have no problems."
