Watch Pitbull Dominate His Miami Home Town at the iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina

Pitbull long ago updated his nickname from “Mr. 305” — after his home area code — to “Mr. Worldwide.” But maybe he’d consider changing it back, just for a night, when he headlines this Saturday’s iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina, which will be streamed live from the hometown that spawned our humble hero, Miami. It gets underway here at 8:30 p.m. ET.

He may not want his current moniker back, anyway, since Pitbull has already announced that he finds being merely the king of the known world a bit limiting. “Now, we’ve got to think of another name like Mr. Another Planet or something.“

He is nothing if not the Prince of Ubiquity, which, when you think about it, puts a provocative spin on his recent tiff with Donald Trump. You may remember that Pitbull was in the news last summer with a series of disses toward The Donald, defending his core community against some slaps he saw implicit in the candidate’s immigration policy. But maybe there was more to it. Because Pitbull is so ambitious, it could just be that he sees Trump as… competition.

"Music business: 90% business, 10% talent,” he said in a recent CNBC special, Pitbull: Fame & Fortune. (That’s right: when Pitbull submits an hour-long profile, it’s not for MTV or VH1, but for cable’s foremost financial channel.) “It’s great that you can rap, it’s great that you can sing,” said Mr. Universe-and-Beyond, “but if you don’t understand the business then the people around you are going to take advantage of your business.”

From all indications, this has not been a problem. Every month, it seems, Pitbull is back in the headlines, often with some new deal he’s made (albeit not always, since he does also make philanthropic news with the charter school he helped build in his original hood, Miami’s Little Havana).

Among the recent developments from the constantly scrolling newsfeed that is Pitbull’s career:

* He recently signed to host his New Year’s Eve special for Fox for the second year in a row.

* He just appeared as himself on Empire, appearing in a performance sequence alongside actor Jussie Smollett. This was the cameo that set a thousand recap blogs ablaze. The official Vanity Fair Empire column was sent into paroxysms of all-capital letters: “Before I begin this recap, I just have to say: Pitbull was on Empire. You guys, PITBULL AKA MR. WORLDWIDE AKA THE SOUNDTRACK TO ALL HEAVY PETTING THAT GOES DOWN AT BAR & BAT MITZVAHS WAS ON LAST NIGHT’S EPISODE OF EMPIRE… He wore an all-white Colonel Sanders-esque suit while performing yet another song about having fun. How many songs is that exactly? 17,000M and my mom loves them all.”

* The man just spent some quality time at the AmericanAirlines Arena, from which the iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina will be streamed: Taylor Swift invited him to be the guest there on one of the final nights of her U.S. tour, as she sang the hook originally performed by Ne-Yo on Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything.”

* He recently became a paid ambassador for the tourism corporation Visit Florida. Swift is free to welcome everyone to New York: Pitbull’s going to bring them to the beach… “Sexy Beaches,” to cite the relevant theme song for his beckoning spots.

* The Norwegian Cruise Line just invited him to name their next ship, which he’ll christen Nov. 9. That may not sound like a big deal, but the cruise company has previously only allowed female celebrities to name their boats. Pitbull may be macho, but he’s not afraid to take on traditionally feminine tasks!

* This year, he released Dale (translation: “Let’s go”), his first Spanish-language album in five years. Among the singles: “Baddest Girl in Town.” What do you mean, that title doesn’t sound like espanol to you? These petty distinctions are why Pitbull makes the big bucks and you don’t!

* If you want an album that’s all in English, rest assured that Pitbull does not intend to keep you waiting. His previous English effort, Globalization, came out only a year ago, and an EP of remixes of his collaboration with Chris Brown, “Fun,” came out just this summer. But he’s already moved on. His new single, released just last week, is “FREE.K,” leading the way for a tenth album that is due early next year.

That’s hardly even invoking his full list of commercial endorsements and alliances. He’s had deals, past or present, with Dr. Pepper, Dodge Dart, Bud Light, Voli Vodka, Playboy, Kodak, and Walmart, as well as the inevitable branded fragrances. It’s a wonder he had time between all those business dealings to show up for his Hollywood Walk of Fame unveiling last year.

At this point, you may be wondering about the wisdom of any maxims you ever heard about overexposure being a bad thing. It never seems to affect Pitbull, though, because he’s pop’s primary party-starter… someone with more than enough energy to turn any occasion into, yes, a fiesta, but with so sure a sense of self that he has no need to tax you with too much personality. “Navel-gazing” is something he’ll never be accused of. As if he, or we, could ever see his midriff with all that confetti flying.

"When you make this music that makes everybody feel good, that is the goal,” he recently told CNN Spotlight. “When you come and see me … I want you to escape. No mortgage. No bills. No baby mama drama. No child support. No economy messed up. No war. No terrorists. Just come here and lose your mind and enjoy.”

Does that list of “no’s” include no Donald Trump? If he did mention the billionaire, it might make Pitbull even more of a Latino hero than he already is. But that might be too great a real-life intrusion. Chances are he’ll just keep the party going… and retire to his hotel room afterward to think about building his own Pitbull Tower.

If you go to Pitbull’s home page, you’ll see a video explaining how he fulfilled his “seven-year plan for global success.” Year 1, freedom; year 2, invasion; year 3, build empire; year 4, grow wealth; year 5, put the puzzle together; year 6, buckle up; year 7, make history… all with explanatory examples attached. If he tries to turn this plan into an Art of the Deal-style bestseller, interstellar domination will be just that much closer.

It may be Pitbull’s mega-universe and we’re just living in it, but there will be some other prominent residents at Saturday night’s Miami show — including co-headlner Jennifer Lopez and acts including Don Omar, Prince Royce, Becky G, Wisin, Fonseca, Voz de Mando, Camila, and Marco Antonio Solis.
