ITZY turns up Oakland crowd in first Bay Area concert

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — Since debuting in 2019, Korean girl group ITZY performed its first show in the Bay Area on Saturday night at Oakland Arena.

Thousands screamed at the top of their lungs as the star quartet* of Yeji, Ryujin, Yuna and Chaeryeong opened the show with “Born To Be,” the title track of their 2024 album.

Within thirty minutes of its set, ITZY performed its biggest hit to date “WANNABE.” The 2020 song is the group’s most-watched music video with more than 545 million views on YouTube

Locals personally welcome ITZY for its first Bay Area show

Despite being on its second world tour, ITZY has yet to perform in the Bay Area — until Saturday. The group’s first tour, “Checkmate World Tour,” only had a Los Angeles show back in 2022.

The East Bay stop is the second in ITZY’s U.S. leg of its “Born to Be World Tour.”

Bay Area ITZY fans have waited for years to see the group perform live. Towards the end of the concert, the group watched personalized video messages from local ITZY fans welcoming them to the region.

“Bay Area Midzy’s (the fanbase’s official name) have waited so long for you,” the video montage read in part.

”Thank you for waiting for us,” Yuna told the crowd through a translator.

”The Oakland (show) was much more than what I expected,” Ryujin said, adding she would love to come back to Oakland.

Five years after debuting, ITZY has since amassed more than 20 million Instagram followers, 9 million YouTube subscribers and 6 million followers on X.

*ITZY’s fifth member Lia did not perform. She is on a hiatus and will not be a participant for the “Born To Be Tour.”
