Jack Black says that Tenacious D will “be back” at some point.

In July 2024, Tenacious D canceled their remaining tour dates after Kyle Gass made a controversial joke about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

The remark was made during the band’s performance on July 14 in Australia. During a surprise moment when Black brought out a cake for Gass’ 64th birthday, Gass was asked to make a wish and said, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” as he blew out the candles.

Black took to social media to condemn Gass’ comment, at which point he also announced the rest of the Tenacious D tour had been canceled.

“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding,” Black said at the time.

When asked if he’d spoken to Gass since the tour’s abrupt ending, Black said, “Yeah, we’re friends. That hasn’t changed. These things take time sometimes… And we’ll be back when it feels right.”

Shortly after the tour was canceled, Gass apologized for his comment. He said in a statement, “The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”
