Jack Osbourne reaches 16 years of sobriety after 'the toughest year of my recovery'
Jack Osbourne is celebrating 16 years of sobriety.
The TV star, 33, shared his personal milestone on Sunday, admitting he’s especially glad to reach it after experiencing the “toughest year of my recovery.” Osbourne, who has MS, split from his wife, Lisa, last spring shortly after welcoming their third daughter. He was also recently the victim of a random attack in a coffee shop.
“By far this has been not only the toughest year of my life but also the toughest year of my recovery,” wrote Osbourne, who got sober in the middle of his The Osbournes fame. He talked about continuing to stay sober “even in the face of legit pain and sadness… from divorce to learning how to be a single father of 3 little girls, to showing up for my family when they have needed support the most.”
Osbourne, whose new Travel Channel is series Portals to Hell debuts Friday, wrote that, “Even though this last year of sobriety was filled with so much pain,” it has helped him grow. Though he added, “I would love to tell you I managed this by being some kind of spiritual giant who roams the halls of recovery meetings, but it’s not the case. I’m here writing this today sober because of the friends in my life who showed up for me when I needed support the most. I will forever be grateful for all you did. You know who you are. I love you all.”
It ended with a quote from the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book.
In April 2003, during the success of The Osbournes, Sharon and Ozzy’s youngest child went to rehab to treat an OxyContin addiction. Several months later, he broke his silence during an MTV interview, saying, “I don’t want my life to be controlled by a drug.”
In the same interview, he said it was an epiphany about his friends led him to rehab. “A lot of them were near 30, unemployed, living off their parents. There were heroin addicts; there were the world’s biggest couch potatoes,” the teen said. It was like… I want to be in control of my life.”
Rehab obviously didn’t end all of Osbourne’s troubles. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2012. That same year he started a family with Lisa, but they parted ways bitterly last year. Police being called after a fight broke out between Osbourne and his wife’s new male model boyfriend soon after.
This year, Osbourne has dealt with his father and Ozzy & Jack's World Detour sidekick’s ongoing health woes. Then earlier this month, Osbourne was at a coffee shop in L.A. when a random stranger punched him in the head in a totally unprompted attack.
