Jacksonville microbrewery to become fourth area brewpub to close in recent months

After more than six years, a Springfield microbrewery plans to turn off its taps permanently this spring.

Hyperion Brewing Co., 1744 N Main St., will become the fourth Jacksonville-area craft brewery to close within recent months. The craft brewery announced the planned March 31 closing on social media Wednesday afternoon.

Saying "we are changing direction," they posted that their growing family was a factor in their decision to close.

"After much discussion, we have made the difficult decision not to renew our lease and close Hyperion Brewing Company," they said on their Facebook and Instagram pages. "It’s been gratifying as well as trying the last 6 and a half years growing Hyperion here in Springfield."

Although saying "we've made so many amazing friends and memories," they noted, "with our expanding family we’ve decided to focus our time on this new dynamic."

The owners couldn't be reached for comment immediately.

Hyperion is the latest local craft brewery to shut down.

After four years, the family-owned and operated, Lemonstreet Brewing Company at 2100 Dennis St. in the Rail Yard District closed in December. Lemonstreet announced it was shutting down on social media with a post titled "So Long, Friends" on its lemon-brand symbol.

Lemonstreet didn't say why it was closing in the post. The microbrewery thanked its supporters and urged them: "Please support your local breweries."

That craft brewery opened in September 2019. In August 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic gripped Northeast Florida, Lemonstreet was among local microbreweries that told the Times-Union about the challenges resulting from state-mandated shutdowns, capacity limits and other restrictions. At that time, Lemonstreet said it only had been open for about two weeks during five months.

Brewer's Pizza in Orange Park, the home of Pinglehead Brewing Company, closed in November after 14 years in business.

At that time, Taylor Rayburn, Brewer's Pizza general manager, told the Times-Union that the brewpub "no longer was financially sustainable." Brewer's Pizza was hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and never recovered, he said.

In August, Tabula Rasa Brewing at 2385 Corbett St. — also in the Rail Yard District — closed after five years in business. Selling off its kegs as souvenirs, Tabula Rasa didn't announce the reason for the closure.

Hyperion advised patrons and neighbors to "Keep an eye out for a final cheers blow out bash to celebrate in style" — promising that details will be forthcoming.

The microbrewery was known for its community involvement as well as its craft beers. Over the years, Hyperion hosted various fundraisers benefitting nonprofits such as the 2020 Siegtoberfest, which helped The Ark Wildlife Care and Sanctuary in Hilliard.

Customers posted memories and well-wishes Wednesday night in response to the closure announcement.

"Hyperion has been cherished and known by many as a second home. Thanks for everything and best wishes for the rapidly expanding family," a longtime patron posted, noting he was "grateful for many beers, laughs, and nights of friendly company" at the microbrewery.
