Jacob Elordi replaces Andrew Garfield in Guillermo del Toro's “Frankenstein”
The star of "Priscilla" and "Saltburn" will now play one of the most iconic horror monsters of all time for the Oscar-winning director.
Guilllermo del Toro has a new monster to play with. Jacob Elordi, whose movie career took off last year with starring roles in Priscilla and Saltburn, will play Frankenstein's monster in the Oscar-winning director's upcoming adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic horror novel.
Andrew Garfield was originally cast in the role, but Deadline reports that he had to bow out due to post-strike scheduling conflicts (the same reason that Steven Yeun recently had to drop out of Marvel's Thunderbolts movie). Oscar Isaac will play Dr. Victor Frankenstein himself, the scientist who builds a living creature out of dead body parts. Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and Felix Kammerer will also star in del Toro's Frankenstein, according to a public post by Netflix.

This new Frankenstein will mark del Toro's second movie at Netflix, following his stop-motion reimagining of Pinocchio in 2022, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Film. He has also produced various TV shows for the streaming service, including the horror anthology Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities and the animated Trollhunters franchise. Frankenstein does not have a release date yet, but del Toro tweeted on Sunday that he begins production this week.
Del Toro has never been shy about his passion for Frankenstein, in all its forms. In 2015 he tweeted that Shelley's original novel is his "favorite book of all time," and he included James Whale's iconic 1931 Frankenstein film (which famously starred Boris Karloff as the monster) on his list of 10 favorite movies for the 2012 Sight & Sound poll. Del Toro said then that the classic horror film "touches the very essence of what I am and all that I believe in," and also complimented Karloff's performance for transmitting "both fragility and power" — a duality that definitely exists in Elordi's big-screen performances from last year, as the seductive but manipulative Elvis in Priscilla and the beautiful but innocent Felix in Saltburn.
Elordi told EW last year that he ate a pound of bacon a day to prepare for his performance as Elvis. We don't even want to know what he plans on eating to get into this role.
