Jada Pinkett Smith blasts Golden Globes for 'Girls Trip' and Tiffany Haddish snubs
Jada Pinkett Smith has a serious issue with the 2018 Golden Globe nominees.
In a series of tweets, the Girls Trip star called out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for snubbing the film, which was a box-office success and also a hit with critics. The 46-year-old actress is also miffed by the lack of recognition for the movie’s breakout star, Tiffany Haddish, and is highlighting a troubling theme she sees with this year’s nominees.
I have so much to say on why @TiffanyHaddish was not nominated for a Globe… but I won’t

Actually I will… here we go…

I’m not upset about @TiffanyHaddish or @GirlsTripMovie not getting a nom… I’m discouraged about the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press/@goldenglobes wouldn’t even WATCH the movie.

But yet… Tiff has been asked to present at their ceremony. This isn’t about shaming, this is about the need for discussion of an antiquated system.

As for the claim they couldn’t get the HFPA to lay “eyes on the film or a press conference,” a source tells Yahoo there was a screening on July 18. A Variety editor also tweeted, “Per [Universal Studios], there was an official HFPA screening, invites to the premiere were sent to the group and they received screeners. However, a press conference was indeed foregone, because the group was unable to travel to New Orleans for the junket.”
Smith continued, tweeting it’s not as simple as “racism,” but that Hollywood must “expand its concepts of race, gender equality and inclusion.”
And I dare not invalidate all the many journalist and people from all walks of life who have supported this movie by defining the issue as simply… racism.

Hollywood has systems in place that must learn to expand its concepts of race, gender equality and inclusion in regard to its perceptions of art across the board.

The actress also called out the exclusion of Kumail Nanjiani’s hit film, The Big Sick, and what she believes to be a misidentification of Jordan Peele’s hit horror film Get Out.
The fact that the brilliance of @TheBigSickMovie went unnoticed and the fact that one of the most prolific films of the year, @GetOutMovie, is considered a comedy… illuminates the depths of the sunken place… for real.

Moments like this occur so that we have an opportunity to discuss, recreate and regenerate old paradigms. It’s all about growth. Love.

Tiffany Haddish has yet to weigh in herself on the snubs, although she was tagged in Smith’s tweets.
This isn’t the first time Smith has called out awards shows for what she believes to be a lack of inclusion. In 2016, she boycotted the Oscars after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. “At the Oscars…people of color are always welcomed to give out awards…even entertain,” she tweeted at the time. “But we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together?”
It’s safe to venture that the Smiths likely won’t be presenting at the Golden Globes.
The Golden Globe Awards hosted by Seth Meyers will air Sunday, Jan. 7, at 8 p.m. on NBC.
