Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, and Rebecca Ferguson Discover Evil Alien Organisms in First 'Life' Trailer
By Nick Schager, Yahoo Movies
Jake Gyllenhaal has his hands full this fall with Amy Adams’s not-quite-trustworthy paramour in Tom Ford’s awards-season contender Nocturnal Animals. After navigating that stylish genre terrain, Gyllenhaal takes to the stars in yet another perilous drama — this time opposite Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation’s fearsome Rebecca Ferguson and Deadpool’s wise-cracking Ryan Reynolds — in Life, a sci-fi thriller from director Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Child 44), due to arrive next summer, and now teased in its first international trailer (watch it above).

In Life, Gyllenhaal, Ferguson and Reynolds are part of a larger crew aboard the International Space Station who make a shocking discovery: the first-ever biological specimen retrieved from the surface of Mars. This historic find, however, soon becomes a cause not for celebration, but for terror, when the organism decides — per the creepy instructional-video narration playing over the action — that like all life, it wants to survive by any means necessary.

Suggesting outer-space horrors without ever spelling out exactly what this biological entity is, or what it’s doing to the humans with which it’s come into contact, the first Life trailer hints at big-budget chills without ruining any of its surprises. That immediately makes it one of the most mysterious — and exciting — studio releases awaiting us next summer, even if its premise seems more than a bit been-here, done-that. We’ll all find out what Life has in store for us when the film premieres on May 24, 2017.
