Jaleel White reflects on Bill Cosby friendship: 'A hell of a hindsight thing to look at'
Jaleel White, best known for playing Steve Urkel in the hit ’90s sitcom Family Matters, appeared Sunday on Uncensored and reflected on his friendship with disgraced comedian Bill Cosby, who is currently serving up to 10 years in a Pennsylvania prison for drugging and sexually assaulting women. White first came into Cosby’s orbit when he was nearly cast as Cosby’s young son in The Cosby Show, a role that eventually went to Keshia Knight Pulliam when Cosby insisted on having another daughter instead of a son.
“I fostered a relationship with Mr. Cosby, separate and apart,” White said. “Many dinners at his house, breakfasts, I even ran into a rough patch and he’s directly responsible for why I ended up at the William Morris Agency, which became an education unto itself.”
But the accusations against Cosby and his subsequent conviction have caused White to look back at their friendship in a different light.
“You go back in time and you realize how close you were to something, and you put yourself in rooms where you realize, his wife wasn't there. That woman was probably there for that purpose,” White said. “You know, it's a hell of a hindsight thing to look at.”
White, who said he and Cosby had a falling out but didn’t go into what happened, said he believes Cosby is getting the punishment he deserves.
“It was like, a revered man did a terrible thing and he’s paying the price. It’s just like, I think that’s where we leave it,” White said. “A revered man did a terrible thing and he is paying the appropriate price.”
Uncensored airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on TV One.
