Jameela Jamil slams Tarantino casting of Emile Hirsch after assault conviction

Although the #MeToo movement has begun a conversation about abuse in Hollywood, we have yet to see whether any of that talk will continue to have substantial results in the days to come.

The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil has called out that hypocrisy with regards to the casting of actor Emile Hirsch in Quentin Tarantino’s film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. In 2015, Hirsch pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault after he choked executive Daniele Bernfeld, for which the actor was sentenced to 15 days in jail.

“Emile Hirsch strangled my tiny female best friend until she blacked out at a party in front of dozens of witnesses at Sundance Film Festival (and was convicted) but Tarantino just cast him in a movie. INTENSE case of rich white male privilege eh? Cool. Cool. Cool,” Jamil tweeted on Friday.

During the assault, which occurred at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015, Hirsch allegedly put Bernfeld in a chokehold and pulled her onto the ground before continuing to strangle her. Hirsch claimed he had been drinking and did not remember the incident.

According to Jamil, Hirsch did not pay for Bernfeld’s treatment for PTSD nor has he apologized to her.

Although details surrounding Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are scarce, the film will focus on the Manson Family murders in 1969. Hirsch has been cast as Jay Sebring, who was killed alongside Sharon Tate.
