Jamie Costa channeling Robin Williams on YouTube 'screen test' has fans calling for a biopic
A short film of the late Robin Williams, performed by actor Jamie Costa, has sparked calls from fans for a full biopic of the legendary actor.
Costa posted the five-minute scene on YouTube Monday channeling Williams from the "Mork & Mindy" era with Sarah Murphree playing a wide-eyed Pam Dawber to perfection. Called "ROBIN, test footage scene," the video has more than two million YouTube views and climbing.
Set on March 5, 1982, the scene shows Dawber interrupting Williams as he manically runs through Mork lines in his make-up chair. Dawber breaks the news of comedian John Belushi's death.
Belushi died at the age of 33 from a drug overdose in 1982.
Costa's emotional Williams, who had been partying with Belushi the night before, cannot take the news, insisting: "No, I told you, I was with him. John's not dead, I was with him last night."
In the video, a knock at door reminds the duo that Williams is needed on the set, and he goes back to reciting his lines, clearly distressed by the news.
In response to the uncanny depiction, fans online immediately called for Costa, 31, to star in a complete movie about Williams, who died by suicide in 2014 at age 63.
"Jamie Costa would absolutely kill it as Robin Williams in a biopic. He was born to play this role. I seriously hope this gets picked up and greenlit by a major studio," wrote one Twitter user.
Another Twitter user wrote, "I don't often get goosebumps from something truly uncanny, but this is quite magical footage – even when he just says 'no' with sadness, the resemblance is remarkable. If a biopic does get made with Jamie Costa as Robin Williams, get a great script & director to do it justice."
San Francisco Chronicle film critic Mick LaSalle wrote an article arguing that Costa should play the part of the famed local resident Williams.
"I’m with the YouTube commenters. I want this picture to go into production yesterday," LaSalle wrote in the piece titled, "The YouTubers are right: Jamie Costa should definitely star in a Robin Williams biopic."
