Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal poised to win matching guest star Emmys for ‘The Bear’
The Emmy races for Best Comedy Guest Actress and Best Comedy Guest Actor often result in massive surprises for awards pundits. Last year’s shockeroo victories for Judith Light of “Poker Face” and Sam Richardson of “Ted Lasso” are just the most recent examples. But this year, if Gold Derby’s Creative Arts predictions turn out to be accurate, there won’t be too many people with their jaws on the floor.
“The Bear” guest stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal currently have overwhelming leads to win their two respective races for playing Donna Berzatto and Michael Berzatto, aka the mother and brother of Jeremy Allen White‘s Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto. Curtis enjoys 82/25 odds to prevail, while Bernthal is sitting pretty at 37/10 odds. Interestingly enough, both actors have submitted the episode “Fishes” for Emmy consideration — that’s the Christmas flashback hour from Season 2 which featured countless shouting matches and emotional moments.

This is Curtis’ second career Emmy nomination after her 1998 bid for the telefilm “Nicholas’ Gift”; she also has a Best Supporting Actress Oscar to her name for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022). Meanwhile, Bernthal is up for his second consecutive Emmy nom for “The Bear” after losing last year’s guest actor contest to Richardson.
For Best Comedy Guest Actress, Curtis now competes against Kaitlin Olson (“Hacks”), Olivia Colman (“The Bear”), Maya Rudolph (“Saturday Night Live”), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Kristen Wiig (“Saturday Night Live”).

And Bernthal’s category rivals in Best Comedy Guest Actor are Ryan Gosling (“Saturday Night Live”), Christopher Lloyd (“Hacks”), Bob Odenkirk (“The Bear”), Will Poulter (“The Bear”) and Matthew Broderick (“Only Murders in the Building”).
The last time two guest stars from the same comedy prevailed in the same year were Maya Rudolph and Dave Chappelle from “Saturday Night Live” in 2021. Prior to that, there was Rudolph and Eddie Murphy (“SNL”) in 2020, Jane Lynch and Luke Kirby (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) in 2019, Melissa McCarthy and Chappelle (“SNL”) in 2017, Tina Fey and Justin Timberlake (“SNL”) in 2009, and Jean Smart and Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”) in 2001.
