Jane’s Addiction cancels rest of tour after onstage fight between Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro: ‘Our hearts are broken’
Jane’s Addiction has canceled the rest of their reunion tour after frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro got into a fight onstage in Boston Friday night.
The band shared the news in a statement on their Instagram account Monday.
“To all the fans, the band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group,” the statement began.
“As such, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour,” the message added.
The announcement also said that refunds for the canceled dates will be issued at the point of purchase.
In another statement, Navarro, 57, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery blamed Farrell, 65, for the scuffle and the tour being canceled.
“Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour,” began the statement, shared on Navarro’s, Perkins’ and Avery’s Instagram accounts.
“Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs,” they added.
“We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.”
The trio concluded their message by saying their “hearts are broken.”
The band was performing at the Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston on Friday, Sept. 13, but the show ended early when chaos ensued.
Farrell was in the middle of singing “Ocean Size” and became visibly aggravated, shouting expletives at the audience and bandmates.
He proceeded to turn to Navarro and rammed his shoulder into him before he started punching the guitarist.
Several crew members and Avery, 59, broke up the fight, and Farrell was escorted away from the crowd’s view.
The next day, the rock group announced it canceled its Sunday show in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and that fans would be refunded for their tickets.
“We want to extend a heartfelt apology to our fans for the events that unfolded last night,” the band wrote on their Instagram Story.
Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, shared her account of what led to his heated outburst during the band’s Boston show.
She revealed tensions between Farrell and the rest of the band had been growing because his voice was being drowned out by all their instruments.
Etty Lau further claimed that after the other three band members left the stage, Avery “walked up to Perry, upstage, in the dark, behind [sound technician Dan Cleary], put Perry in a headlock and punched him in the stomach three times.”
“Perry was a crazed beast for the next half an hour — he finally did not calm down, but did breakdown and cried and cried,” she wrote.
Farrell has yet to address the incident.
