Jasmine Cephas Jones joins Kyle Meredith to talk about her new single, “Baby I Can’t Leave You,” and upcoming album, Phoenix. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
The Hamilton actress dives into developing her own unique sound for the new project, an undertaking that led her to create an LP representing one of the biggest transitional moments in her life, both musically and personally. Jones outlines a version of herself that’s been left behind after a period of grief, like the titular phoenix. She was also afforded the opportunity to star in Ava DuVernay’s Origin, which has been life changing, accompanying this time of great transformation.
While aiming for a sound of her own, she also felt compelled to pay homage to Erykah Badu, Prince, D’Angelo, and Stevie Wonder. “I think it was really important for me, I grabbed different people who have like, influenced me,” she says. “But it’s also very important for me to create my own sound, and be like, ‘his is Jasmine,[she] has put her stamp on it,’ you know?”
