Singer Nancy Wilson dies at 81: Quincy Jones, Viola Davis, RuPaul and more pay tribute
Hearts are breaking in the music industry and beyond following the news that singer Nancy Wilson has died at 81 following a lengthy illness.
Wilson was known for her jazz sound, but she resisted the idea of calling herself a jazz singer, according to a 2010 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. “I just never considered myself a jazz singer,” Wilson said. “I do not do runs and — you know, I take a lyric and make it mine. I consider myself an interpreter of the lyric.”
Wilson recorded dozens of albums, won scores of awards and appeared on shows such as Hawaii Five-O and The Cosby Show over the course of her more than five decades in show business. She made a lot of celebrity friends and fans along the way, many of whom paid tribute to her Friday.

So sad to hear about the passing of the great Nancy Wilson. She was a magical performer. I’m so glad I was able to spend time with her and hear her beautiful voice in person.

I loved hearing #NancyWilson‘s voice throughout our house when my Mom would play her records. It was a dream come true when I got to meet her AND host a benefit concert featuring Nancy AND the Count Basie Orchestra at Carnegie Hall!!! What a night. Rest in Peace, Ms. Wilson. pic.twitter.com/mjMGT65LQi
