Jenna Fischer ‘Sorry’ About Tax Bill Blunder: ‘I Feel Genuinely Bad’ About Tweet

Jenna Fischer has issued an apology for a tweet about the Republican tax reform bill using outdated information.

“I feel genuinely bad about getting my facts wrong and I’m sorry,” Fischer wrote in her statement on Wednesday. “I did not mean to spread misinformation. I was well-intentioned, but I was behind on my research.”

“So, I’ve deleted the tweet,” the actress continued. “Because, I believe accuracy is important.”

Fischer commented on the bill on Saturday, mistakenly saying that it would revoke a tax deduction for teachers who purchase their own classroom supplies.

“I can’t stop thinking about how school teachers can no longer deduct the cost of their classroom supplies on their taxes…something they shouldn’t have to pay for with their own money in the first place,” Fischer wrote in the now-deleted tweet. “I mean, imagine if nurses had to go buy their own syringes. #ugh”

In fact, an early proposal from House Republicans floated the idea of doing away with the deduction, but it was kept in place in the final bill, signed into law by the president on Friday.

“I’m not ashamed to say I was wrong and I’m not ashamed to correct it,” Fischer wrote on Wednesday. “I was taught that taking responsibility is the right thing to do. (Thanks Mom and Dad!) Please accept my apology.”
