Jennie Garth regrets starring in the CW's “90210” reboot: 'I didn't know how to say no'

Garth and her "Beverly Hills, 90210" castmates Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty all reprised their roles for the 2000s series.

Jennie Garth has some regrets about bringing Kelly Taylor back to Beverly Hills.

While reuniting with some of her Beverly Hills, 90210 costars for 90s Con 2024 this weekend, the actress shed some light on her decision to return for the 2008 CW reboot of the original hit teen drama.

"I wish I hadn't done it," Garth admitted at a panel attended by PEOPLE.

Seated beside Brian Austin Green, Gabrielle Carteris, and Ian Ziering, who did not reprise their roles for the series, she continued, "No offense to them. The producer was a friend of a friend, and I remember he came over in my living room, sat me down, [billed it as] this chance of a lifetime."

She recalled, "He asked me to do it, and I didn't know how to say no then. But the people were very nice and all the best to them."

Garth was not the only OG cast member to pop up on 90210. Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty also returned for the series, which starred Shenae Grimes-Beech, AnnaLynne McCord, and other franchise newbies as a crew of wealthy kids at a Beverly Hills high school.

Weighing in on the decision to reboot the series just eight years after the original was canceled, Carteris said, "I never wanted to [do it]. I was so shocked they were doing a new show. I was like, 'Is it like they long so much you're just going to try to reinvent it over and over?'"

Green chimed in to say, "No offense at all. To me, we did 10 years of that show and it's like, 'Okay, done.'"

The castmates eventually did get together again in 2019 for Fox's very meta BH90210, which saw them play fictionalized versions of themselves reuniting to launch a reboot of their '90s show.

Carteris called that six-episode reunion "cathartic," adding, "It felt full circle to be together as adults, having had our children, being able to work together. I thought it was probably one of those most impactful moments of my life."

Together for Saturday's panel, the costars also reminisced about their time on Beverly Hills, 90210, the edgy drama that became TV's hottest teen show after its 1990 premiere. They also paid tribute to their late costar Doherty, who died at age 53 in July after a yearslong battle with cancer.

Green called Doherty "incredibly brave," adding that his longtime friend was "an amazing example for everyone" for sharing her journey with the world.

"Going through something as difficult as that and being open to being completely transparent and sharing with everyone is brave," he said.

Carteris added, "I have a friend right now who is really sick with cancer, and she said that Shannen really inspired her. I think that her legacy is truly making a difference for those who are struggling to know that there's hope."
