Jennifer Lawrence on why she's now a Democrat: 'I was voting against my own rights'
Jennifer Lawrence wants to clarify her voting record.
Lawrence captured headlines last week when she revealed on Heather McMahan’s Absolutely Not podcast she “was a little Republican” growing up. The Oscar winner issued a statement Tuesday to make it known she’s now a “proud” Democrat.
“I grew up in a republican family and voted for John McCain in 2008, but through Obama’s presidency, and growing up to realize I was voting against my own rights, I am proud to say I am a Democrat,” Lawrence, 30, shared on Twitter.

The Kentucky-born actress, who previously supported Hillary Clinton, opened up to McMahan about how her politics have changed over the last 12 years. “I grew up Republican,” she explained. “My first time voting, I voted for John McCain.”
Lawrence told the comedian, “I was fortunate to grow up in a Republican house where I can see the fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies, and I can also see that the social issues weren't in line with my views.”
“When Donald Trump got elected, that just changed everything. This is an impeached president whose broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there has been a line drawn in the sand,” Lawrence added. “I don't want to support a president who supports white supremacists.”
Although Lawrence did not vote for President Trump four years ago, she understood why so many people did in her home state.
“Here’s a big powerful man in a nice suit, pointing at you and going, ‘I’m going to make you rich.’ It’s so appealing,” she told Vanity Fair in 2018. “The Democrats made a huge mistake by chastising the Trump supporters, and that was disgusting to me. Of course they’re not going to vote for Hillary Clinton; they’re going to vote for Donald Trump. You laughed at them when their plight is very real.”
It’s no surprise, then, who Lawrence is voting for in the 2020 presidential election.
“I’m voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this year because Donald Trump has and will continue to put himself before the safety and well-being of America,” Lawrence told V magazine. “He does not represent my values as an American, and most importantly as a human being.”
