Jennifer Lopez Could Be Subpoenaed As Witness In Diddy Lawsuit Cases
Jennifer Lopez and Diddy’s relationship in the ’90s/early 2000s may have been brief. But, the repercussions of their fleeting romance can still be felt 20 years later, with J. Lo potentially being legally called upon as a witness in one of Diddy’s lawsuit cases.
According to InTouch, the couple’s infamous arrest following a New York City nightclub shooting in 1999 may result in her being subpoenaed as a potential “firsthand” witness and required to testify under oath.
“Jennifer Lopez’s presence the night of the shooting incident and then departing in the same vehicle as Combs makes her a witness with firsthand knowledge and could subject her to being subpoenaed to testify under oath,” Pete Gleason, a New York lawyer, told the outlet. “If there are any criminal charges or civil claims not outside the statute of limitations, this would likely prove problematic for Lopez.”
The couple began dating in 1999 after meeting on the “If You Had My Love” music video set. That same year, Sean Combs and Lopez were both arrested, along with former Bad Boy rapper Jamal “Shyne” Barrow, on weapons and bribery charges in connection with a nightclub shooting in December.
In 2000, a prosecutor argued in court that Combs sparked the shooting after getting into an altercation with another clubgoer, the New York Times reported at the time. Sean Combs would be later acquitted in 2001 and Jennifer Lopez’s charges were dropped. Shyne, on the other hand, would be sentenced to 10 years in prison and convicted on five charges. Upon his release, Shyne was deported to Belize in 2009.
Lopez and Combs’ romance lasted two years before the couple called it quits in 2001.
But, apparently, the story didn’t end there as most people thought. In a new explosive report on Diddy, Rolling Stone found that didn’t he want to let Lopez go without at least fighting to get her back. Damian Vasquez, a former Bad Boy intern, told the outlet that Combs had specific staffers camp outside of MTV’s TRL studios with signs in hopes of winning back J. Lo’s love.
While they both kept details regarding their breakup on the hush-hush, J. Lo opened up about what led to the end of their journey together with VIBE in 2003. “It was the first time I was with someone who wasn’t faithful,” Jenny from the block told VIBE at the time. “I was in this relationship with Puff, where I was totally crying, crazy and going nuts, it really took my whole life in a tailspin.”
The infamous nightclub shooting reentered pop culture’s consciousness after Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones Jr.’s filed a lawsuit against Diddy in February. Jones accused the mogul of sexually assaulting and harassing him. Elsewhere in the suit, Combs’ former producer alleged that the Bad Boy founder “[displayed] his guns and bragged about getting away with shooting people” — which some people connected to the 1999 shooting.
