Oprah Winfrey’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus tour is in full swing — and on Saturday, Feb. 29, during the Los Angeles leg of the tour, the host sat down with Jennifer Lopez, who talked about her recent Super Bowl performance and the powerful moment when she took the stage with her daughter Emme.

It was a moment she’ll always remember: Lopez’s 11-year-old daughter joined her mother during the closing of the halftime show at the 2020 Super Bowl to sing a mashup of “Let’s Get Loud” followed by Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In the USA.” The symbolism was clear as Emme sang from an illuminated cage, making a subtle reference to the Trump administration’s family separation policy at the Mexican border.

“I was representing not just myself, but women, Latinos, and everything, and all humans,” Lopez told Oprah at The Forum on Saturday. “The message that was very clear to me that needed to be said was, be proud of who you are and don’t ever be afraid to use your voice and get loud in the face of Injustice or anything that you don’t believe.”

“It was such a huge celebration,” she continued of the magical moment. “To see [Emme] with so much joy…to be so much in her own power… so young and all the little girls around me dancing and going off and it was such an amazing feeling is hard to describe. It’s hard to describe how proud I was.”

Emme certainly proved that she’s following in her mama’s footsteps during the big performance — and it’s something that Lopez never saw coming. “I always thought she was really shy,” she said. “I never thought about putting [my kids] in the business or to work or anything. I just didn’t want that for them because I work with a lot of kids and it’s a lot. It’s a lot of pressure.”

But even though the performance was memorable, powerful, and beautiful to watch unfold — not everyone felt it was appropriate. In fact, Lopez and Shakira received quite a few critiques claiming parts were too sexy, but the Hustlers star isn’t letting those negative comments affect her.

“It didn’t bother me,” she shared. “It was such a beautiful night and it was so well-received so to listen to like the small fraction of people who thought it was too sexy or trying to say something negative would have been a sin for me to concentrate on that.”

And why should she concentrate on such negativity when she has so much positivity in her life? Aside from her explosive career and upcoming wedding to Alex Rodriguez, J.Lo’s also extremely proud of the way she’s raised her two kids, and she dished to Oprah about how they’ve grown up to be respectful and well-rounded people.

“I think I’m a really good mom because I relate to my kids in a way that doesn’t make them feel less than me, that they feel like they can talk to me,” she said. “I talk to them. We talk to each other with love, respect. I want to be around them, they want to be around me… I always said I wanted to create a home that they always want to come back to, that’s my goal… a place where they’re never going to be judged, they can say whatever they want to say and they’re going be supported.”
