Joy’All, released back in June, found Lewis embracing country music and many longstanding songwriting influences while teaming up with go-to Nashville producer Dave Cobb.
“I’ve always been into great songs. I gravitated towards country music more through California — Buck Owens, Gram Parsons, and the Byrds,” she told Rolling Stone earlier this year. “That was my foray into that. I went into RCA thinking that Dave and I were going to make more of an Americana-sounding record, but I had demoed all of the songs on my phone, and they had almost a Nineties, Tracy Chapman, R&B kind of vibe. He wanted to stay true to my demos. So we didn’t really hammer into the Americana stuff. It happened naturally.”
