'Jeopardy!' contestant Matt Amodio's historic 38-game win streak comes to an end
Matt Amodio’s 38-game Jeopardy! win streak came to an end Monday. The Yale Ph. D. student was a dominant competitor and racked up more than $1.5 million during his impressive run. Whether it was the stiff competition or just an off day, Amodio had trouble pulling away from contestants Jonathan Fisher and Jessica Stephens.
Following the first round, host Mayim Bialik commented, “I have to say, within the context of Matt Amodio's winning streak, this is one of our closer games.”
While Amodio had a small lead going into Double Jeopardy!, he soon fell behind Fisher and Stephens. For the first time during his run he went into Final Jeopardy in third place.
The final clue was, “Nazi Germany annexed this nation and divided it into regions of the Alps and the Danube: the Allies later divided it into four sectors.”
Amodio incorrectly answered, “What is Poland?” It cost him $5,000 and left him with $5,600. Stephens and Fisher both correctly answered “What is Austria?” Stephens finished in second with $28,799 and Fisher became the new champion with $29,200.
Congrats to today's two brilliant challengers for making it an exciting game of #Jeopardy today! Let's celebrate a match well played by Jonathan and Jessica!

Amodio ranks behind only Ken Jennings and his amazing 74-game streak as the winningest player in the show’s history. And like Jennings, Amodio has garnered his share of unexpected fame.
“I'm at the store and people come up to me and say, ‘Hey, Matt,’ and I'm really bad at remembering both names and faces of people,” Amodio told Bialik during the player interviews. “And so I always rack my brains and say, ‘Do I know you?’ I used to be able to assume that if they know me, I know them, but not anymore.”
