Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri Shut Down Possibility of Romance Between Their Characters on “The Bear”
The costars are not interested in anything more than friendship for new business partners Carmy and Sydney
Sorry, fans — there won't be a romantic relationship anytime soon between Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White on The Bear.
White, who plays hot-headed head chef Carmy, and Edebiri, who plays sous-chef Sydney, shut down rumors of a romance between their characters – in unison! – during a press conference on June 24.
The actors both replied "No," when asked if a romance between Carmy and Sydney had been considered for the upcoming season, Vanity Fair reported, with White, 33, adding, “There was no talk in the rooms about any romantic implications."
Reflecting on the dynamic between their characters, who are officially in business together starting in season 3, Edebiri, 28, said that Sydney has "really looked up to" Carmy, but she's now "in the thick of doing business with" him – which is "a lot more chaotic than she might have idealized before they really started working together.”
The partnership was Carmy "trying to welcome her in a little bit," White said, per the outlet, and that "affects Carmen and Syd’s relationship."
"He's got a lot going on in his mind all the time, and people aren’t always aware of exactly what’s going on."
Edebiri – who will make her directorial debut in season 3 – has previously spoken about the possibility of a romance grow between her character and White's.
"I don't want to rain on anybody's parade, but I don't think so. I don't think so. And Jeremy has said this, too," she told TVLine following the first season.
She referenced comments her costar had made to W Magazine weeks earlier. White had said that he hoped a romance was "not going to be explored in later seasons" – for "Sydney's sake."
"I just love their relationship [as it is]: the amount of respect they have for one another, and that they have a shared history, even if it's not together," he told the outlet.
In season 3, Carmy, Sydney and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) do whatever it takes "to elevate The Bear, their beef stand turned fine-dining establishment, to the highest level, all while doing their best just to stay in business," per an official synopsis.
"It’s a losing battle every single day in the restaurant business. Carmy pushes himself harder than ever, and demands excellence from his crew, who do their best to match his intensity.”
As the team behind the restaurant "grows in size, each member will strive to reach a greater level of service within their role," and their "quest for culinary excellence will propel the crew to new levels and stress the bonds that hold the restaurant together."
