Jeremy Irons Says ‘Batman v Superman’ Criticism Was Deserved

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was widely considered confusing, muddled, or just downright bad. But one critic of the film may surprise you. Jeremy Irons, who plays Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman, recently echoed poor reviews of the film in an interview with the Daily Mail.

Batman v. Superman with all its faults still managed to gross more than $800 million, which Irons believes softened the blow. When asked about the film being panned, Irons said “Deservedly so. I mean it took $800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter, but it was sort of overstuffed.” Overstuffed is a nice way of dancing around the movie shoehorning in the meta-human storyline while also trying to service the Batman v Superman mythos, in addition to its myriad of other problems.

But despite all the criticism, Irons conveyed a sense of optimism with the upcoming direction of the Justice League franchise. While admitting Batman v Superman was “muddled,” Irons said, “I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller — it’s more linear.” And for anyone who is worried that Irons might bail on the franchise, fear not. The actor went on to say “I’m tied into the Batman at the minute, which is nice because it’s a bit of income.” So, yes, he is doing the new Batman film and Justice League: Part One partially for the money, but that didn’t make his take on Alfred Pennyworth any less impressive the first time around.
