Jerry Springer Explains Why People Have Been Coming on His Show for 26 Years
Today is taking the week to do a “Where Are They Now?” segment about famous talk show hosts of yesteryear. Sally Jesse Raphael and Montel Williams have already dropped by. Following that pair was none other than Jerry Springer. It could be pointed out that it’s not entirely wonderful for Springer that he is the subject of a “Where Are They Now?” segment, considering his talk show is still on the air, but, hey, what do I know?
Sheinelle Jones asked Springer why he thinks his program has lasted 26 years. “Well, first — it’s stupid,” quipped Springer. “It’s got a niche. And no one else kind of goes in that niche. So I think that’s one of the reasons it lasts. The personality of the guests. No one is watching because of me. They’re watching because the stories are crazy and the people are outrageous.”
Springer was then asked the big question: Why on earth would anybody ever go on that show? “If I had to guess, it’s for so many of our guests, no one ever asked them a question,” Springer suggested. “They live their lives — they don’t have kids who ask them their opinion. They don’t have parents who ask their opinion. They’re not in a job where their opinion is valued. It is like, for one day in their life, people are really paying attention.”
