Jesse Lee Soffer confirms 'Chicago P.D.' departure: 'This is sad but true'

Jesse Lee Soffer’s crime-solving days in The Windy City are coming to an end.

Soffer, who stars on "Chicago P.D." as Detective Jay Halstead, confirmed his departure from the NBC crime drama following its upcoming 10th season.

“This is sad but true. Just want all the fans to know how grateful I am,” Soffer wrote in a tweet Monday. “You guys are why we do it! It has been an honor. Love you all.”

While Soffer didn’t reveal the reason for his exit, he said in a statement to Variety and Deadline that he "will always be proud of my time as Det. Jay Halstead."

"I want to thank the incredible fans for their unwavering support during the past 10 years and want to express my deepest gratitude to Dick Wolf and everyone at Wolf Entertainment, Peter Jankowski, Matt Olmstead, Derek Haas, Michael Brandt, Rick Eid, Gwen Sigan, NBC, Universal Television, my fellow castmates and our incredible crew," said Soffer in the statement. "To create this hour drama week after week has been a labor of love by everyone who touches the show."

USA TODAY has reached out to Soffer’s representatives for comment.

Soffer made his sleuthing debut as Halstead on the sophomore season of "Chicago Fire," of which "Chicago P.D." is a spinoff, in 2013. He has also appeared in the "One Chicago" franchise medical drama "Chicago Med."

The Emmy-nominated actor got his start on television with an appearance on the soap opera “Guiding Light” in 1999. Following roles in "The Brady Bunch Movie," "A Very Brady Sequel" and the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen sitcom "Two of a Kind," Soffer landed the role of Will Munson on the romantic drama "As the World Turns." Soffer starred on the soap opera from 2004-2010.

"Chicago P.D.", a Dick Wolf production, returns for its 10th season on NBC on Sept. 21.

Soffer isn't the only one leaving the Wolf-NBC family. Kelli Giddish, who plays Amanda Rollins on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” recently announced her departure from the series.
