They’re so wrong but so right.

Sometimes, something is so wrong that it’s right. We often see this in fashion—most frequently in footwear and most notably in the wrong shoe theory. This concept is all about, well, the wrong shoes; it’s about not reaching for the shoe that would make the most sense with an outfit, but rather the style that’s the most confusing and eyebrow-raising. Jessica Biel’s latest outfit totally follows this, and honestly, I’m intrigued.

The actress has been busy filming her latest TV series, The Better Sister, in New York City, which naturally means plenty of on-set sightings to relish. But the latest is penciled into my memory because it’s just so unexpected. Biel wore an ultra-chic button-front midi skirt, and while I love a midi skirt, the button hardware makes it cooler than 99 percent of the skirts I’ve seen in the last week. Tucked into it was a fitted mock-neck tank top, while rubber clogs rounded out the look. Yes, I’m serious, and yes, I want a pair now, too.

If you were to wear Biel’s outfit, you’d probably think to pair it with some colorful slingback heels—and you’re not wrong! That would be the right shoe, in theory, as the elegant footwear matches her elegant skirt. However, ingoing against the grain, Biel went with an “ugly” shoe; a rubber slip-on clog that looks very similar to the Birkenstock styles Kendall Jenner has been seen wearing. The front is completely enclosed, making the option more suitable for fall, while the open back still offers the ease of wear of a slipper. That, and the rubber upper ensures that they won’t get damaged in the rain in case you get caught in an autumn storm.

Slip-on clogs like Biel’s are a genius option for the simple fact that they’re so easy to wear. And seeing as easy, peasy pieces are more sought-after than ever right now (a.k.a., staples that don’t require much effort), her footwear of choice makes sense, especially on set. Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention the comfort, either, as many of these styles are designed with cushy footbeds that feel like walking on clouds.

I own these Birkenstock clogs, but I’m thinking of adding more to my fall rotation—and pairing them with a dressy midi skirt like Biel to take the wrong shoe theory out for a spin. Shop more Biel-inspired options, below.
