How Jessie James Decker handles social media haters
With more than 3.2 million followers on Instagram, Jessie James Decker is constantly being watched on social media. She’s had to deal with some online nastiness.
“It doesn’t matter, and we need to focus on the good and the positivity in the world and the real relationships,” Decker said Tuesday at BUILD Series in New York City. “Because the other stuff can consume you but, you know, you can’t... It’s not what’s important in life.”
While the singer, reality TV star and designer has a large following on social media, her husband, Eric Decker, and their young children, Vivianne, Eric and Forrest, are the ones who have her heart and fill most of her days. She tries her best to drown out the negative vibes that come from comments on her photos, and Decker receives plenty, sometimes on posts that she hadn’t expected to be controversial. Remember the one that showed her breastfeeding while holding a glass of wine?
“Oh, all the time, but, you know, that’s just part of it,” Decker said of whether she’s ever surprised which of her posts upset people. “You can’t take it seriously, and you can’t get sensitive to it. It’s just, you know, it happens.”
And when it does, Decker reminds herself that the virtual world isn’t the same as the real world.
“Social media is for fun,” she said. “But if it gets to the point where it’s affecting you then get off of it. Don’t look at it.”
Decker hasn’t had that problem yet.
