Jimmy Carter: ‘Worst Mistake’ Trump Has Made Was to Hire John Bolton
Former president Jimmy Carter has weighed in on Donald Trump’s decision to hire John Bolton as national security adviser, calling it the “worst mistake” the president has ever made.
“I have been concerned at some of the things he’s decided,” Carter said. “I think his last choice for national security adviser was very ill-advised. I think John Bolton has been the worst mistake he’s made.”
The comment came during Carter’s sit down with Norah O’Donnell, set to air on Tuesday’s installment of “CBS This Morning.”
A known foreign policy hardliner, Bolton has been criticized for hawkish views that have included calls for military attacks on North Korea and Iran, and for his ties to anti-Muslim organizations. He becomes Trump’s third national security advisor in 14 months following the departures of Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and H.R. McMaster.
Carter, who is currently promoting his book “Faith: A Journey for All,” also criticized Bolton in an interview with USA Today, saying he is a “disaster for our country.”
The Georgia Democrat slammed Bolton as a “warlike figure” who has been “advocating a war with North Korea for a long time and even an attack on Iran, and who has been one of the leading figures on orchestrating the decision to invade Iraq.”
