Jimmy Kimmel apologizes for misleading video that mocked Mike Pence, but adds a new joke

Jimmy Kimmel is apologizing for a deceptively edited segment that mocked Vice President Mike Pence for carrying empty boxes of personal protective equipment into a Virginia health care center for a photo op.

After dropping off boxes of the equipment, Pence is shown returning to a vehicle where an aide informs the VP that the remaining boxes in the car are empty. Pence is then heard saying, "Well, can I carry the empty ones? Just for the camera?"

Narrating the video on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Thursday, the comedian says, "Mike Pence pretending to carry empty boxes of PPEs into a hospital is the perfect metaphor for who he is and what he's doing."

While the footage was real, the edited portion left out a reference that suggested Pence was clearly joking.

Kimmel has since deleted the video and issued an apology on Twitter Saturday, while also mocking the White House for being untruthful.

"it would appear that @vp was joking about carrying empty boxes for a staged publicity stunt. The full video reveals that he was carrying full boxes for a staged publicity stunt," the late night host wrote. "My apologies. I know how dearly this administration values truth."

Kimmel, along with other late-night hosts, has been on less than friendly terms with Donald Trump.

In a tweet Tuesday, Trump praised Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, and claimed "his Ratings easily beat no talent Stephen Colbert, nice guy Jimmy Fallon, and wacko 'last placer' Jimmy Kimmel," with varying degrees of accuracy. (Gutfeld's show airs weekly, the others are nightly.)

Kimmel fired back at the president in a video posted to his Twitter account Tuesday.

"Wacko last? I hope he wasn’t talking about me," Kimmel said. "I think maybe this was another typo situation. I think what he meant to tweet was, ‘I am completely devastated by the loss of life caused by this insidious virus. My thoughts are with the families of those who've passed. I pledge to spend every waking moment working to make sure our medical workers have the support they need and every American has access to tests. P.S. Congrats to Greg Gutfeld!’ That’s better, right?”
