Jimmy Kimmel, John Mulaney turn down Oscars host offer

EW has confirmed that both media personalities declined to emcee the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards.

Jimmy Kimmel's Oscars hosting streak has come to an end.

Nearly five months after he emceed March's 96th Academy Awards ceremony on ABC, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Kimmel will not return as host of the 2025 Oscars, as a source tells us that he and fellow comedian John Mulaney turned down offers to preside over the upcoming telecast.

Kimmel has hosted the Oscars four times across the last decade, both in 2017 and 2018 and again in 2022 and 2023. In fact, the only Oscars broadcast that Kimmel hasn't fronted since 2017 remains the 2022 edition, which was co-hosted by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes, as the 2019, 2020, and 2021 iterations proceeded without hosts.

The 56-year-old is currently tied with Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon at No. 4 on the list of personalities who've hosted the Oscars the most across the last 96 ceremonies.

In January, Mulaney, 41, earned solid reviews for his performance as the host of the Academy's Governors Awards, and later fronted the popular Netflix talk series John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA in May. He also co-hosted the Independent Spirit Awards with fellow comedian Nick Kroll in 2017 and 2018.

“Sure, why not?” Mulaney recently told The Hollywood Reporter when asked if he'd consider hosting the Oscars in the future. “It would be really fun. It’s hosting the Academy Awards. Johnny Carson did that.” 

EW has reached out to representatives for the Academy, Kimmel, and Mulaney for comment.

The 2025 Oscars air March 2 on ABC.
