Jimmy Kimmel on Oscars Debacle: ‘This Is Not One Of My Pranks’

Just moments after the Oscars broadcast came to an end, host Jimmy Kimmel joined Kelly Ripa backstage and gave his thoughts on what may be the biggest debacle in the history of the Academy Awards. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were presenting the award for Best Picture, the final award of the evening, when they awarded the Oscar to La La Land instead of Moonlight. The mistake was quickly corrected, resulting in an awkward few minutes when nobody seemed to know what was really going on.

“I know that I’m going to be blamed for this. This is not one of my pranks. I just want to establish that upfront. The envelope … I don’t know if they had the wrong envelope or if there was some kind of envelope malfunction,” Kimmel said.

According to Beatty, the card he was given had Emma Stone’s name on it for her La La Land nomination.

Kimmel was quick to make the comparison to Steve Harvey’s recent flub, when read the wrong name for the winner of the Miss Universe pageant before correcting himself moments later. Kimmel then joked that he actually was responsible for the mix-up.
