Jo Koy Concedes “Weird” Taylor Swift Joke Fell “A Little Flat”
Jo Koy, reflecting on negative reviews of his debut hosting gig at the 2024 Golden Globes, tells GMA3 that the criticism stings, and that he understands the backlash over the now-infamous Taylor Swift joke.
While insisting he had fun last night, a candid Koy conceded that it was “a tough room,” a “hard job” and a “hard, hard gig.”

“I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt,” Koy said. “I hit a little moment there where I was like, ‘Ahh.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I am a stand-up comic but that hosting position is a different style. I kind of went in and did the whole writer’s thing…We just had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but hey, I gotta still say I loved what I did.”
“I had fun. You know, it was a moment that I’ll always remember,” a seemingly deflated Koy said the day after the Globes.
Asked to name a moment that was particularly rough, Koy immediately stated the obvious.
“I think it was when the Taylor one was just a little flat,” he said. “It was a weird joke, I guess. But it was more on the NFL. I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn’t come out that way.”
The most-buzzed about moment of the night came when Koy said, “As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”
After the joke, the camera cut to Swift in the audience, and the Eras Tour singer was seen with a deadpan look on her face as she took a sip of her Moet & Chandon.
Reviewing his own Globes performance, Koy said, “I wanted to give a little bit more of me, and I just felt I fell a little short. That’s all.”
