Jo Koy Speaks Out on His ‘Off Night’ as Golden Globes Host, Admits Taylor Swift Joke Was ‘Weird’
A deflated Jo Koy appeared on GMA3: What You Need to Know Monday to reflect on his poorly received monologue as the host of the 81st annual Golden Globes, particularly lamenting a Taylor Swift joke he admitted fell “a little flat.”
Koy had attempted to make a comment about how the Globes aired immediately after a Kansas City Chiefs football game, a team the mega pop star is associated with thanks to her relationship to tight end Travis Kelce.

“As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader,” the comedian said during Sunday’s live show. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.” The camera quickly cut to Swift, who was sipping her drink in a seemingly unamused fashion.
“It was a weird joke, I guess,” Koy told GMA3 anchors Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan. “But it was more on the NFL. I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL, but it just didn’t come out that way.”
When asked if he’d ever take another stab at the gig, Koy said he wouldn’t immediately jump at the chance of emceeing another awards show.
“That’s a tough gig, I’m not going to lie,” he said. “I love the art of stand up. It was cool the opportunity came to me, but hosting is just a beast. That’s about it.”
He then referred to his performance as an “off night,” and admitted to feeling deflated by the overall reaction saying, “I wanted to give a little bit more of me, and I fell a little short. That’s all.”
