Founded in 2015 by Tribeca and Chanel, Through Her Lens provides industry support, artistic development and funding to emerging U.S.-based self-identifying women and non-binary filmmakers. The program includes a three-day immersive workshop with one-on-one mentorship and intimate conversations focused on script-to-screen development, music composition, costume design, producing and directing.
Five pairs of writer-directors and producers will participate in the program and pitch their short films to the jurors. One team will receive full financing to produce their film with support from Tribeca Studios. The four other teams will be awarded grant funds to support their films’ development.
This year’s program takes place Sept. 17-19 in New York.
“I’m incredibly proud of our Through Her Lens alumnae, a tremendously talented group of women filmmakers who are making waves within the industry, including A.V. Rockwell, Numa Perrier, Nikyatu Jusu, Kat Coiro, Sonejuhi Sinha, Gabriella Moses, Hannah Peterson, Ani Simon-Kennedy, Laura Moss, Caroline Lindy, Shuchi Talati, the list goes on,” Tribeca Enterprises co-founder and CEO Jane Rosenthal said in a statement Wednesday morning. “Together with Chanel, we are reshaping the landscape of Hollywood, and this year’s class of emerging talent is no exception. I can’t wait to see the ways in which they will leave their mark — we need their young, diverse voices and creativity now more than ever.”
This year’s filmmaking teams include “Brace Yourself” writer-director Chloe Sarbib and producer Rtusha Kulkarni, “Black Shore” writer-director Sophia Youssef and producer Céline Bava-Helms, “Copy Save” writer-director Alyssa Loh and producer Charlie Traisman, “Haint” writer-director Jahmil Eady and producer Selena Leoni and “Selah” writer-director Lara Everly and producer Elease Lui Stemp.
Through Her Lens is also supported by an advisory committee consisting of Jane Fonda, Patty Jenkins, Laura Karpman, Greta Lee, A.V. Rockwell and Kerry Washington.
Since its founding, Through Her Lens has supported nearly 100 emerging filmmakers and the development of 40 short films. Nearly 70 percent of all participants are women or non-binary people of color.
The ninth annual workshop will kick off on Sept. 17 with luncheon hosted by Chanel and Rosenthal at Locanda Verde.
