Joanna ‘JoJo’ Levesque, Aaron Tveit returning to ‘Moulin Rouge’ this summer

NEW YORK — Joanna “JoJo” Levesque is ready to “gitchi gitchi ya ya” all over again.

This summer, the chart-topping singer is returning to the role of the leading lady in“Moulin Rouge! The Musical.” She’ll also have the show’s original leading man on her arm.

Producers announced Thursday that Levesque and Aaron Tveit will rejoin the cast of the Tony Award-winning adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film of the same name.

Both performers are slated for a 12-week limited engagement running from July 23 through Oct. 13 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

Levesque, known for the Billboard Hot 100 hits “Too Little Too Late” and“Leave (Get Out),” made her Broadway debut as Satine in “Moulin Rouge!” last year. Oscar winner Nicole Kidman starred as the character in the blockbuster movie, while Tony winner Karen Olivo originated the role on Broadway when the show premiered in 2019.

For his starring role as Christian in “Moulin Rouge!,” Tveit took home the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in 2021. Earlier this year, the Middletown native took over the title role of Broadway’s “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” His other Broadway credits include “Next to Normal,” “Wicked” and “Hairspray.”

“Moulin Rouge!,” which won 10 Tony Awards— including best musical — will celebrate its fifth anniversary July 25.

Set in 1899 at the famed Paris nightclub, the jukebox musical features a score peppered with pop classics by Elton John, Madonna and the Talking Heads, juxtaposed with modern-day hits from Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Katy Perry. LaBelle’s 1974 R&B classic “Lady Marmalade” has served as the unofficial theme to both the stage adaptation and film — snagging a Grammy Award for Pink, Christina Aguilera, Mya, Lil’ Kim and Missy Elliott for their new millennium rendition.
