Joe Alwyn Finally Breaks Silence on Taylor Swift Breakup
More than a year after parting ways, Joe Alwyn has finally broken his silence about his breakup with Taylor Swift.
The English actor dated the pop star for about six years before the dissolution of their relationship in April 2023. A year later, Swift, 34, released The Tortured Poets Department, a double album featuring songs that many of her fans believe were inspired by the years she spent with The Favourite actor.
The first hint alerting Swifties that Alwyn, 33, might soon address his breakup with the “Cruel Summer” songstress came earlier this week when The Sunday Times teased the cover of its upcoming June 16 issue on Instagram. Beside an image of Alwyn was text reading: “London Boy: What Joe Alwyn Did Next,” an apparent reference to Swift’s song “London Boy” from her 2019 album Lover. The article itself, which the British newspaper published on Sat., June 15, specifically mentioned the song by name.

Alwyn appeared to have expected questions about the "Anti-Hero" singer when he spoke with The Sunday Times. He told the paper he had “hope” that “anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years” when asked if he had listened to The Tortured Poets Department. He added that it was “unusual and abnormal” for their breakup to be “in the public domain” just days after they separated, with people around the world suddenly “able to weigh in.”
Alwyn, who stars in the upcoming Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film Kinds of Kindness, described the relationship as “very real” and noted there would always exist “a gap between what is known and what is said.” He and Swift “mutually” chose to keep parts of their time together “private,” he said, and “I see no reason to change that now.”
At the time of their breakup, Swift had recently launched her Eras Tour, which continues to be a hit among fans as the megastar takes her show around the world. Meanwhile, her romantic life once again became the subject of public interest last fall when she began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, with Swift appearing at NFL games to publicly support him and Kelce doing the same at several of her Eras Tour shows.
On his end, Alwyn said he is “in a really great place in my life,” though he declined to comment to The Sunday Times on whether he has resumed dating or if he still talks with Swift.
