John Cale Announces Reissues of Paris 1919 and The Academy in Peril

John Cale has announced a pair of his early albums are getting reissued. The remastered editions of Paris 1919 and The Academy in Peril will be out on November 15th via Domino.
This marks the first artist-approved reissue for each record. Paris 1919 Deluxe Edition features previously unreleased outtakes, liner notes by Grayson Haver Currin, and a brand new recording called “Fever Dream 2024: You’re a Ghost,” while The Academy in Peril includes the digital bonus track “Temper.” Pre-order Paris 1919 here and The Academy in Peril here.
“Revisiting work from the past is a double-edged sword for me. Of course, it’s bound to happen when you’ve been making music for 60 years or so,” Cale said in a statement. “What’s unique about this process with Domino, is their desire to get it right. Not merely reissue something for the sake of an anniversary or racking up a catalog favorite — but finding new treasures and highlighting what made it special in the first place.”
He continued, “After hearing the test pressings, it occurred to me that the new mastering was a major part of how these works will be presented, rather than simply being preserved. There are moments of clarity and even a laugh or two had by revisiting not only the music, but recalling the sessions (and antics) that made up what became these two recordings.”
Released in 1972, The Academy in Peril followed Cale’s solo debut Vintage Violence, which he has said “masked” his personality. It’s a mostly instrumental record that was inspired by his classical training. Paris 1919 arrived the next year and leaned more into contemporary pop and rock influences like the music of Brian Wilson and the Bee Gees.
Earlier this year, Cale released his 18th studio album, POPtical Illusion, which he’ll be supporting with a tour of the UK and Europe next year. See the full schedule below, and get tickets here.
