What beef? Why John Cena now embraces comparisons to the Rock.
It took years of “calling him out” in the WWE, but wrestler John Cena finally entered into the orbit of the sport’s reigning superstar, the Rock, in the early 2000s.
It feels like history is repeating a decade and a half later, as wrestler turned actor John Cena is starting to rack up roles (Trainwreck, Ferdinand, Blockers and the new, shockingly good Transformers spinoff Bumbleee) like those that have made Dwayne Johnson the most successful actor ever to transition from the wrestling ring.
“The Rock’s in his own universe. Anytime I could be put in that conversation, I will take it,” a “super-grateful” Cena told Yahoo Entertainment about comparisons he’s once again drawing to the Fast and the Furious and Moana star.
“He has broken the mold, he is one of the most gifted entertainers, used to be sport entertainers. He has captivated a planet. He inspires everybody that he comes into contact with. He’s in a league of his own. There isn’t another him. It’s weird because he’s the only one to compare to, but you want to talk about setting the bar unreachable? I’m just happy to be doing what I’m doing. But he’s in his own universe.”
Just don’t expect any more call-outs now that they’ve gone Hollywood. Take this punt from the ever-humble Cena.
“If I were to call him out,” he said, “I’d be like, ‘Hey, man… Keep it up, because you’re doing it.’”
Bumblebee opens Friday. Watch John Cena react to the film’s stellar reviews:
