John Cena in talks for 'Suicide Squad 2' with James Gunn
James Gunn’s Suicide Squad is looking to add some muscle to the group in the form of John Cena.
In what would amount to the Bumblebee star’s first comic book movie role, Cena is in talks for a mystery role in the next Suicide Squad movie. Variety was the first to report the news of negotiations.
Given Cena’s stature, it would reason physical strength would be the character’s prime asset, yet details are scarce.
The original Suicide Squad from director David Ayer starred Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Viola Davis, and Joel Egerton in a story about a team of supervillains battling the evil Enchantress (Cara Delevigne). The film earned $746.8 million worldwide at the box office, but it was still haunted by negative reviews as Warner Bros.’ DC universe tried to find its footing.
According to producer Peter Safran, Gunn will now write and direct a “total reboot” of Suicide Squad instead of a sequel.
“First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot,” he told JoBlo during press for Shazam! “So it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot.”
Robbie will return as Harley Quinn for the movie, while Davis will reportedly reprise Amanda Waller. Jai Courtney also confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter his involvement as Captain Boomerang. “I loved playing Captain Boomerang,” he said. “It’s just like a rockers nightmare. Just looking forward to reprising that and getting the gold tooth back in and getting after it.”
Deadline reported earlier this month that Idris Elba will appear as a new character, while Will Smith won’t be involved.
Elsewhere in the DC stratosphere, Robbie recently wrapped filming on her other Harley movie, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
