John Mayer's video for 'New Light' is so bad, it's good
Not all of John Mayer’s videos can feature the Prancercize lady, so he has to get creative in other ways. “New Light” is certainly original, with a healthy dose of funny, which are two things that characterize Mayer himself.
The singer and guitarist, 40, touted the over-the-top cheesy new release by saying he needed to make a video “but nobody could agree on a budget, so I went to a place downtown and made this with a company that usually does birthday and bar mitzvah videos.” The low-budget production is shot with a green screen — stock footage courtesy of the faux Celebrity Status Music Video Service company — and let’s just say he didn’t spend a lot on the wardrobe.
The whole thing is just begging for GIFs, as he travels the world (New York! Paris! Malibu! Africa! Egypt! office cubicles! under water!) and dances with shirtless people in his favorite sick-day outfit, so we’ll do our part and give them to you…
Hey, you. Yeah, you. Follow along, will ya?
Mayer takes his fans on a journey around the globe without leaving the studio.
Sometimes with the help of a second John — ’cause two are better than one…
He even travels to Times Square, where nobody wants to go — unless it’s done via green screen.
We especially enjoyed him swimming with the (gold)fishes.
So here’s his outfit — in all its glory.
A cute blonde in a convertible? Check.
A cute blonde in a cubicle? There is one of those too.
Shirtless men dancing on the beach? Yes, this has something for everyone!
And we loved every silly second of it.
And don’t think for one second that this glorious enterprise wasn’t conceived and crafted while the marijuana proponent was stoned; this has edibles all over it. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
In addition to making his own music, Mayer has been touring with Dead & Company. The band will kick off another summer run on May 30.
