John Oliver claims Trump doesn't know enough about the Bible to sign it
On Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, Donald Trump was the target of Oliver’s ire for signing Bibles at a church in Alabama while visiting survivors of deadly tornadoes that tore through the state last Sunday.
First, Oliver took a shot at the fact that Trump signed the cover of at least one of the Bibles, something he called “weird.” Next, Oliver mocked Trump’s signature itself, saying, “I don’t care what your name is, that is not how you sign something. That’s how you test that your Sharpie still has ink left before you sign something.”
Oliver’s main issue was that, though Trump claimed during the campaign that the Bible is his favorite book, Oliver doesn’t believe Trump actually knows anything about it. To prove his point, Oliver showed a clip from 2015 in which Trump was unwilling, or unable, to name his favorite bible verse, and when asked which testament he likes better, Trump answered, “Probably equal.” After showing the clip, Oliver said, “That is a future president joyfully and transparently lying about the Bible being his favorite book and being unable to name a single passage from it.”
And though religious leaders have said there’s nothing wrong with Trump signing Bibles, it’s safe to say Oliver sees things quite a bit differently.
“Seeing Trump’s autograph on a Bible should be like seeing a picture of your own mom on the cover of a Penthouse magazine,” Oliver said. “It should render the whole thing useless, and if you keep reading after discovering it, you’re going directly to hell.”
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
