John Stamos’ Alcoholism Got So Bad That ‘I Don’t Remember’ Filming ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ After DUI Arrest; Family and Agents Sent Him to Rehab
John Stamos appeared on “The Howard Stern Show” to promote his new memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” and revealed that his alcoholism got so bad around 2015 that he actually does not remember being on set to film his role in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” The actor appeared to forget he even booked a part in the film and was reminded the day after his 2015 arrest for driving under the influence that he had to go to Toronto, Canada, to film.
In previous interviews, Stamos has said his 2015 DUI arrest was a definitive moment in convincing him that it was time to get sober. But it didn’t happen instantly. He told Stern that after he got home from jail, he “drank another bottle of wine by myself.”

“I was just with Rita Wilson and Nia [Vardalos] in Greece and I realized, I forgot that the next day [after the arrest] they said, ‘Oh, you got to go to Toronto, you’re in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,'” Stamos recalled. “I’m like, ‘What?’ I was hammered. I don’t remember being on that set.'”
“As soon as I came back from Toronto and ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding,’ my sisters were there and my agents, and everybody was like, ‘Okay! It’s time,'” he said. “It wasn’t even an intervention, it was like, ‘We packed your bags, you’re going … I went [to rehab] for 30 days, and I just knew it was time. That’s it. I’ve not had a drink since eight years ago.”
Stamos and Rita Wilson played the couple George and Anna in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” Stamos’ character was a Greek American news anchor. The couple’s son is a running joke in the sequel as Gus (Michael Constantine) tries to marry him off. Nia Vardalos wrote and starred in the sequel, which was directed by Kirk Jones. A third “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” movie opened in theaters in September. Stamos did not reprise his supporting role.
Stamos’ memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” is now available for purchase.
