John Stamos speaks out about Lori Loughlin facing prison in the college bribery scandal: 'I just can't process it still'
John Stamos will be keeping quiet about Lori Loughlin’s alleged involvement in the college admissions scandal until the verdict is in.
In a new interview with GQ, Stamos was asked about his longtime TV wife from Full House and Fuller House being charged in the bribery scheme to get her daughters into college — for which she faces up to 40 years in prison.
“I gotta be careful,” Stamos replied. “I want to wait until the trial happens, if it does, or whatever the result is, and then talk about it.”
Asked if he is close with her, he said, “Yes. And I'll tell you one thing that has been strange is: Honestly I can't figure it out. It doesn't make sense. I talked to her the morning everything hit. I just can't process it still.”
But Stamos is clearly in her corner, adding, “Whatever happened, I'm pretty sure that the punishment is not equal to the crime, if there was a crime.”
Loughlin and her husband, designer Mossimo Giannulli, were in a Boston court on Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing. According to the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s charging documents, the pair made $500,000 in bribes to get their daughters — Olivia Jade and Isabella Giannulli — into the University of Southern California as crew recruits, despite neither ever participating in the sport. They both pleaded not guilty. (A Loughlin source told People magazine the actress “honestly didn’t think what she was doing was any different than donating money for a library or athletic field.”)
Stamos and Loughlin have known each other since the ‘80s — when they were both young soap stars. They even shared a kiss on a “date.” While the romance didn’t pan out, they became close friends and later a reel-life couple when they were cast on Full House. They reprised their roles as Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky on the Netflix reboot.
Loughlin will not appear on Fuller House’s fifth and final season, but has gotten support from co-stars including Candace Cameron Bure, who said in March that “family sticks together no matter what.”
